Date (and time):
13 March 2010 (19:30 - 23:00)
It's not in the West End and there's been little fanfare, but if you're a theatre buff in the know then Kingston is the place to be this February. Peter Hall is directing A Midsummer Night's Dream. Dame Judi Dench is starring in it as Titania. They first worked together in 1962 at the Royal Shakespeare Company and came to represent its golden age.
In this production, set in Elizabethan times, Titania is an ageing Queen Elizabeth type (which should suit DJD), fascinated by the theatre and surrounded by courtiers. The tale is one of star-crossed lovers and evil fairies, so not Shakespeare's deepest work. But it's beautiful and lyrical and filled with charming touches. Plus, it's Peter Hall and Judi Dench - what more do you want? Rose Theatre, Kingston, KT1 (0871 230 1552). Sat 7.30pm, £12 - £37.50
