SRA chairman says too many solicitors are rubbish

SRA chairman Charles Plant has slammed the legal profession, saying too many solicitors are "simply not good enough".

The chief wallah delivered his tongue-lashing in a speech to the Devon & Exeter Law Society, where he criticised a "significant minority" of UK solicitors for letting down the public and the profession, according to a Legal Futures report.

Pulling out his naughty list for examples, Plant pointed to the 500 firms who don't have a compliance officer 5 months after the deadline passed for their appointment. He said it demonstrated a "breathtaking disregard of regulatory obligations" and vowed to take enforcement action against those still in breach at the end of the year, while smoke shot from his ears.

Plant tells off the legal profession yesterday

Plant also recognises that the SRA, which (perhaps unfairly) suffers from a reputation for moving slower than a limbless sloth, has work to do. In a speech last month he admitted that "significant reform of our approach is necessary if we are to be a regulator fit for the liberalised legal landscape". Tough talk. Hopefully it means that in the future the SRA will home in on firms like City Law well before they collapse with millions in debts. In the meantime, there are still plenty of easy pickings.

It is a bit rich for the Chairman of the SRA to comment that too many solicitors are "simply not good enough". Does he not recall the fiasco of the SRA being unable to perform its basic task of renewing solicitors' practising certificates on time?

At least Plant recognises that the SRA is failing in its role as regulator. The SRA needs to get its own house in order before turning on the profession. I am sick and tired of trying to get sense out of the contact centre and correcting the SRA's mistakes for it.

I'm surprised that the SRA is even able to track the number of firms that haven't appointed a COLP. Someone there told me that their internal computer systems don't even talk to each other!

Dear SRA,

Thank you for taking the time to badmouth the profession.

Once you've finished, I would be grateful if you could process my practising certificate. This week I have emailed you each day, without response. I have also phoned your offices 28 times without getting through to a person.

Kind regards

Ponti

Am I alone in wondering whether at least some of the the 500 firms who are criticised for failing to notify the appointment of a COLP had in fact been assiduously attempting to do so by mail, telephone, email and the SRA's apology for a website, but without managing to penetrate the SRA's notorious communications barriers?

I agree, the SRA needs to get its own house in order. Having tried to use it's frankly incompetence systems and processes to renew my CPD accreditation, I am fed up with the SRA. Staff members in it's contact centres never get back to you, and expect you to follow due process...

Trouble is, whatever the failings of the SRA, he has a point... There are too many incompetent lawyers out there.

Shame the SRA keeps trying to open up access to the profession so wide that incompetents can get in. The QLTT has been a particular example of this, but you can find a similar trend in what they do about the LPC and training contracts.
