An Eversheds associate has just fast-tracked herself to the front of the firm's redundancy programme after leaving a top secret document about the Iraq war on a train.

The lawyer, who was travelling from Leeds to London on Monday, left her briefcase in a luggage rack at the end of the carriage. When she arrived at Kings Cross she noticed that the case had been taken and notified the police. The papers, from the Ministry of Defence, have yet to be found.

The Attorney General's Office confirmed the theft and said that "action is underway in an attempt to recover the papers".

A spokeswoman for Eversheds said that the firm was not in a position to comment other than to confirm that it was conducting an investigation into the incident.
